Each student comes to the classroom with a different set of issues and problems. Often, teachers want a consultant to “tell me what I can do with a kid who hits other kids all the time.” It’s difficult for teachers to look at Behavior Problems from a “big picture” view point. By the time they have contact with a consultant they are frequently frustrated, tired, and ready to throw in the towel. They say, “if only Tommy weren’t in this class, the rest of the kids would…”, etc., etc. Support 4 Teachers consultants understand these difficulties, and seek to support teachers in their efforts to be patient and realize it is THEIR behavior that has to change before the youngster will. In other words, the teacher must quickly come to terms with the fact that the adults are the ones responsible for creating a safe, respectful and motivated environment. The students are responsible to respond.
